Rescue of the Month: February 2016:
Each month we will feature one of the wonderful Animal Rescues that we support.
Barrhead Animal Rescue Society and BARS Rescue
was started by Terry Colborne in 2010 after one stray cat inspired him to get involved and make a difference in the lives of companion animals within the Barrhead community. Our initial beginnings serving the town of Barrhead have rapidly expanded and our rescue efforts currently include a large focus on Edmonton and neighboring areas. We have become a large network of rescue foster homes over a vast geographical area aiding in the rehabilitation and adoptability of the numerous canines and felines in our care. We at BARS strongly support responsible pet ownership, including the spaying and neutering of all companion animals. All of our adoptable animals are spayed/neutered prior to adoption (in addition to being up to date on their vaccines and microchipped). Since our inception, BARS has successfully rescued and re‐homed over 1500 animals.
In addition to our adoption program, we also have many other programs and projects that our volunteers are dedicated to. We care for several permanent feline and canine fosters that are not eligible for adoption for various medical and/or behavioural reasons. Through numerous levels of involvement, we also support many feline feral colonies in Edmonton as well as a major colony project in the Spruce Grove area. Our efforts focus on utilizing a Trap/Neuter/Return approach to ensure that the feral feline population is responsibility managed and additionally, we have worked hard at identifying felines within the colonies that can be rehabilitated and then adopted.
Our mission is to provide a safe and nurturing environment for unwanted, abandoned, lost, and mistreated pets until they can be placed into loving homes. We accomplish this through proactive intervention, public education, fundraising, and community outreach. We are a completely volunteer run society and rely on private contributions to achieve our goals.
